Staff picks
Every book here has been read, loved and argued over by someone behind the counter. Our notes are tucked inside.
Our story
A bookshop should feel like the last lit window on the street: somewhere to wander in, lose an hour, and leave carrying a new world under your arm.
The nightjar is a bird of dusk, rarely seen and often heard, singing while everyone else settles in. We named the shop for it because we keep the same hours. Nightjar Books is independent, stubbornly small and run by people who would rather hand you the right book than the bestselling one.
No algorithms. Every title earns its place because one of us couldn't stop talking about it.
For night-shift workers, insomniacs and anyone who reads best once the day goes quiet.
Well-loved secondhand copies sit beside new releases, waiting for their next reader.

After hours
Some of our best hours happen after closing. Pull up a chair.
Fortnightly
One book, a pot of tea and a dozen opinions. Newcomers are always welcome at the long table.
Each season
Writers read from new work among the shelves, then stay to sign copies and talk craft.
Monthly
An open floor for read-aloud poetry once the doors are locked and the lamps are low.
Write to the shop
Looking for something specific, planning a gift, or curious about our evenings? Drop us a line and a bookseller will write back.
Not on our shelves? We'll order it in and set it aside with your name on it.
Describe the book you lost years ago. We enjoy the hunt.
